X12 286 — Commercial Vehicle Credentials
The 286 transmits official credentials — IRP cab card, IFTA decal, oversize permit — issued by a jurisdiction to a commercial carrier.
Purpose
The 286 documents issuance or renewal of commercial credentials: IRP apportioned cab card, IFTA license, single-trip oversize/overweight permits, hazmat endorsement. It is the formal output of an application filed with a motor vehicle department.
It feeds CVISN and credentials databases of CVO (Commercial Vehicle Operations) operators. Acknowledged by 997. Pairs naturally with the 285 (safety side).
Envelope structure
The 286 travels within the three X12 envelope levels (ISA/IEA,
GS/GE with functional group CC, and ST/SE).

Common pitfalls
- Cab card expiration: an IRP cab card expires annually; running with an expired 286 leads to immediate citation at the weigh station.
- Single-trip vs annual: a single-trip permit only covers one route; applying it to a second route is a statutory offense in several states.
- Hazmat endorsement: a hazmat endorsement must accompany the credential — a 286 hazmat without TSA security clearance is invalid.
