X12 215 — Motor Carrier Pickup Manifest

The 215 is the consolidated manifest of shipments tendered to a carrier at a single pickup. Use it when a shipper tenders several distinct shipments on the same day, to multiple destinations.

Purpose

The 215 lets a shipper say to the carrier, at the start of a pickup tour: "here is the full list of shipments you will load at my dock: for each, here is the BOL, the destination, the weight". The carrier uses it to prepare loading-time scanning and pre-allocates each shipment to a transit terminal.

The 215 is useful in high-volume LTL and parcel operations: a large cross-dock sends a single daily 215 that replaces dozens of paper BOLs. On the EDI side it is the antidote to many individual 204s: a single 215 consolidates the tender.

Envelope structure

The 215 travels in a functional group PM (Pickup Manifest). Didactic example in release 004010:

The M10 opens the manifest with SCAC, trailer ID, date. The N1*SH identifies the single pickup site. Each LX loop represents one shipment: M11 carries the BOL, N1*CN the destination, LAD the cargo characteristics.

Common segments

  • HeaderST, M10 (Manifest Identifying Information), DTM.
  • Pickup siteN1 (SH).
  • Individual shipmentLX loop with M11 (BOL Detail), N1 (CN), LAD (Lading), NTE.
  • HazmatLH1/LH2/LFH.
  • SummarySE.

Common pitfalls

  • Pre-allocated vs at-pickup PRO Numbers: some LTLs reserve PRO Numbers for the shipper, others assign them at pickup. Align the scheme before go-live.
  • Consistency with individual 204s: if the shipper already sends a 204 per shipment, the 215 duplicates them; pick one flow to avoid divergence.
  • Pickup capacity: the 215 informs, it does not commit capacity; a 215 covering an unnegotiated volume may be partly refused on the ground.
