X12 871 — Component Parts Content
The 871 transmits the material composition and content origin of an automotive component — percentage US/Canadian content, country of origin parts — between supplier and OEM, for USMCA compliance.
Purpose
The 871 documents the sourcing content of a component: constituent materials, country of origin for each sub-component, Regional Value Content (RVC) calculations per USMCA, Labor Value Content (LVC). It is mandatory for USMCA automotive compliance (formerly NAFTA Article 401).
It feeds tariff classification and duty drawback. Acknowledged by 997. Pairs with 875 and 856 on automotive shipments.
Envelope structure
The 871 travels within the three X12 envelope levels (ISA/IEA,
GS/GE with functional group CP, and ST/SE).

Common pitfalls
- RVC method confusion: USMCA offers Net Cost vs Transaction Value methods — a 871 must use the same method as the associated USMCA Certificate of Origin, otherwise CBP rejects calculations.
- LVC (Labor Value Content): 40% LVC threshold by 2025; a 871 without LVC crashes USMCA verification.
- Steel and aluminum 70%: 70% of steel and aluminum sourced in North America — missing this ratio = USMCA preference lost.
