X12 412 — Trailer or Container Repair Billing
The 412 invoices the repair of a trailer or container between a repair shop (M&R) and the owner or lessee — chassis pool, IEP, BCO, leasing company.
Purpose
The 412 documents an intermodal repair: equipment type, UIIA / IICL damage codes, labor hours, parts consumed, charges. It is part of the M&R (Maintenance & Repair) program governed by industry conventions (IICL for containers, IANA for chassis).
It feeds the reimbursement chain between repair shop, equipment provider and user. Acknowledged by 997. Lives alongside the 998 (Set Cancellation) for cancellation and 820 for payment.
Envelope structure
The 412 travels within the three X12 envelope levels (ISA/IEA,
GS/GE with functional group TR, and ST/SE).

Common pitfalls
- Damage codes catalog: IICL and IANA publish official codes; a 412 with a non-standard proprietary code is rejected by pools.
- Pre-authorization: most chassis pools require pre-auth for repairs > $500; a 412 without authorization
REFis held. - Photographic evidence: an expensive 412 (>$1000) without a
REFpointing to M&R photos is contested; always bundle.
