X12 157 — Notice of Power of Attorney
Notification of a legal power of attorney between a principal and an agent, transmitted to third parties (bank, insurer, government agency).
Purpose
The 157 standardises POA (Power of Attorney) notification in EDI. Emitted by a law firm or the principal directly to third parties that must recognise the agent: banks (for cheque signing), insurers (for claim management), agencies (Medicare, Social Security). Includes the POA scope (durable, limited, springing).
Envelope structure
The 157 travels inside the three X12 envelope levels (ISA/IEA,
GS/GE with functional group NP, and ST/SE).

Common pitfalls
- Missing end date: Durable POA is valid until death — specify, otherwise legal ambiguity.
- Too-generic scope: "All powers" not actionable. Specify the specific acts.
- Missing notary: in some States, non-notarised POA is rejected by the receiver.
