On-call rotation is the duty schedule organisation deciding who answers alerts 24/7. Weekly rotation or shift-based (follow-the-sun with US / EMEA / APAC teams). Tools: PagerDuty, Opsgenie, Splunk On-Call. Best practice: not more than 1 consecutive week, salary compensation, post-incident decompression.
Origin
Operational concept from the 1990s (telecom, finance). Popularised in tech by Stripe, Etsy, GitLab.
