Definition

Cross Industry Invoice — XML invoice model published by UN/CEFACT, conforming to EN 16931. It is one of EN 16931's two official syntaxes alongside UBL 2.1.

Origin

Born from UN/CEFACT's Core Component Library, the CII is released in version D16B and onwards. In France, the Factur-X (FNFE) format embeds a CII XML inside a PDF/A-3 for B2B.

Use

The CII XML is the technical foundation of Factur-X and XRechnung's CII profile. An EN 16931-compliant CII invoice is exchanged via PEPPOL after CII↔UBL conversion if needed (gateways do this automatically).
