UNTDID 1001 (Document type code)
UNTDID 1001 states whether a document is an invoice, a credit note or a correction.
Definition
UNTDID 1001 ("Document/message name, coded") is a code list from the UN/EDIFACT directory. It qualifies the function of an exchanged document. In EN 16931 it populates business term BT-3 ("Invoice type code") and governs how the receiver books the document.
Common codes
380— commercial invoice;381— credit note;384— corrected invoice;389— self-billed invoice.
Other codes exist (e.g. 386 prepayment invoice), but each profile or national mandate usually restricts the allowed values.
Good to know
A credit note (381) reverses the sign of amounts relative to an invoice (380). Choosing the wrong 1001 code can cause double counting or rejection. CIUS profiles, such as the French specification, often restrict BT-3 to a precise subset of UNTDID 1001.
