UN/LOCODE Function

Structural field of the UN/LOCODE, location and transport codes.

Definition

Each UN/LOCODE record carries a Function classifier over 8 positions where each character switches on a role: 1=Port, 2=Rail terminal, 3=Road terminal, 4=Airport, 5=Postal exchange office, 6=multimodal/ICD, 7=fixed transport (e.g. oil platform), B=Border crossing; 0 means the function is unknown.

Origin

Defined in the UN/LOCODE column description and in UN/CEFACT (UNECE) Recommendation 16, which establishes the code and its format.

Example in context

FRLEH = Le Havre, Function column "1234----" → port + rail + road + airport serving the location.

  • UN/LOCODE — the 5-character location code.
  • UNECE Rec 16 — the recommendation that establishes UN/LOCODE.
