Definition

The UMR is a free alphanumeric string of at most 35 characters chosen by the creditor. Combined with the Creditor Identifier it forms a globally unique mandate identifier and must stay identical from the first collection (FRST) through every subsequent one (RCUR). It is carried in the ISO 20022 MndtId element of the pain.008 message.

Origin

Defined as the "Unique Mandate Reference" in the European Payments Council SEPA Direct Debit Rulebooks (EPC016-06 for the Core scheme, EPC222-07 for B2B).
