UNH

Message Header. The first segment of any EDIFACT message: its reference number and type.

Definition

UNH is the first segment of every EDIFACT message, paired with the UNT trailer that closes it. It carries the message reference number (element 0062, unique at the sender and repeated identically in UNT) and the S009 identifier composite: message type (0065, e.g. ORDERS, INVOIC), version number (0052), release number (0054) and controlling agency (0051).

Origin

Defined by ISO 9735 (UN/EDIFACT Syntax Rules), maintained by ISO/TC 154 and published in UN/CEFACT's UNTDID directory.

Example in context

UNH+1+ORDERS:D:96A:UN' — message 1, type ORDERS, version D, release 96A, agency UN.

  • UNT — the trailer that closes the message opened by UNH.
  • UNB — the interchange header that wraps the messages.
