TAX-X12
Tax Reference (X12). The X12 segment that carries a qualified tax reference — distinct from EDIFACT TAX.
Definition
The TAX segment in X12 carries a tax reference: taxpayer ID, tax type (DE 963), jurisdiction (DE 156). It is used in X12 Transaction Sets in financial and commercial domains to qualify the tax context of a transaction.
Origin
X12 TAX was defined by X12.6 in the cross-cutting branch. It must not be confused with the EDIFACT TAX segment, which shares the same name but follows a different syntax and use (Duty/Tax/Fee Details in EDIFACT).
Example in context
TAX*EXEMPT*FD*123-45-6789~
Here, EXEMPT qualifies the status (exemption), FD states the jurisdiction (Federal), 123-45-6789 is the taxpayer ID.
