SWIFTNet
Swift's IP network platform, financial messaging infrastructure.
Definition
SWIFTNet is Swift's private IP network, which replaced the legacy X.25 network. It provides store-and-forward messaging (FIN, FileAct) and real-time messaging (InterAct), with PKI, strong authentication and non-repudiation. Access is through an Alliance gateway and a connectivity interface (VPN box).
Origin
Operated by Swift (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication), a cooperative under Belgian law. Described in the SWIFTNet Service Descriptions published by Swift.
Example in context
An MT 103 sent by a bank travels over the FIN service on SWIFTNet; a bulk camt.053 file goes via FileAct.
