Carrier identifier used across the X12 transportation sets.
Definition
The SCAC uniquely identifies each carrier across transportation EDI (204, 210, 214, 990) and typically appears in the B2/B1/B10 segments. Reserved suffixes (e.g. -U, -X) flag certain modes; the code is renewed annually.
Origin
Assigned and maintained by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA); used as an identity qualifier in the ASC X12 Transportation transaction sets.
