PIA

Additional Product ID. The EDIFACT segment that stacks the other product references alongside the primary identifier on LIN.

Definition

The UN/EDIFACT D.96A directory defines PIA as "to specify additional or substitute identifiers for an item". The segment is composed of:

  • 4347 — Product identifier code qualifier (mandatory): UNCL 4347, e.g. 1 Additional identification, 2 Substitute, 5 Product identification preferred by industry, 6 Product version number.
  • C212 — Item number identification (1 to 5): up to 5 additional references, each with its identifier (7140), type (7143 UNCL — e.g. BP Buyer's part number, SA Supplier's article number, SRV EAN.UCC GTIN, MN Model number, HS Harmonised system, UP UPC), code list (1131), and agency (3055).

Origin

PIA has been in EDIFACT since D.93A. It is heavily consumed by ORDERS, ORDRSP, INVOIC, DESADV, IFTMIN: whenever a product appears in a LIN line, PIA provides the cross-references (supplier item number, GS1 GTIN, customs code, manufacturer code) required for matching and archival.

Example in context

ORDERS line with GS1 GTIN + supplier reference:

Reading: LIN carries the primary GTIN, a PIA Additional (1) adds supplier reference SUPPLIER-REF-78 (Supplier's article number), a PIA Industry preferred (5) adds customs HS 8473.30.

  • LIN — the root product line.
  • GTIN — the GS1 product identifier standard.
  • IMD — the free-text product description.
  • Segment — general notion.
