Definition
Passkeys use ECDH P-256 keys backed up via E2EE sync (iCloud, Google, Microsoft). UX: Touch ID, Face ID, PIN. Cross-platform support via CTAP Hybrid (BLE/QR). Adopted by Apple iOS 16+, macOS Ventura, Android 14+, Windows 11. 2024: Microsoft, Google, Apple support passkeys by default.
A passkey created on one device becomes available on the other devices of the same account, with no new enrolment.

Jointly announced by Apple, Google, Microsoft in May 2022.
