MT tag 56a identifies an Intermediary Institution on the payment path, between Sender's Correspondent and Receiver's Correspondent.
Definition
Tag 56a appears when the payment routes through an intermediary bank that is neither 53a nor 54a. Typical case: a regional Asian correspondent routing an EUR→THB payment via Singapore.
Origin
Present since the earliest MT 103 specifications. With gpi, tracking exposes all 53a/56a/54a/57a hops in near real time.
Use
A USD payment from Paris to Manila may show 53a=Citibank NY, 56a=Citibank Manila, 57a=Bank of the Philippine Islands, 58a=supplier. Each intermediary bank deducts charges.
