K1

Remark. The X12 cross-cutting segment that carries a free-text remark or note.

Definition

The K1 (Remark) segment is an X12 cross-cutting segment that carries free text: a remark, an internal note, a processing comment. It carries up to two Free-Form Information (DE 61) elements. It is generally used to add a human comment alongside structured segments.

Origin

K1 is defined by X12.6 in the list of cross-cutting segments (X12 Trade Data Element Dictionary). It has remained unchanged across every version of the ANSI X12 standard, from edition 002000 to the current 008080 series.

Example in context

K1*REPLACES PO 2026-0040*ITEM DISCONTINUED~

Two free-text remarks: the first states that this is a replacement for an earlier order, the second flags a discontinued item.

  • FTX — EDIFACT counterpart, free-text segment.
  • REF — structured X12 reference segment, an alternative to K1.
  • X12 — the North-American standard.
