Definition

ISO 15022 FIN message categories: (1) Cat 1 Customer Payments + Cheques (MT101 Request Transfer, MT102 Multiple Customer Credit Transfer, MT103 Single Customer Credit Transfer, MT103+ STP variant), (2) Cat 2 Financial Institution Transfers (MT200-MT299 series: MT200 FI Transfer for own account, MT202 General FI Transfer, MT202COV Cover Payment, MT210 Notice to Receive, etc.), (3) Cat 3 Treasury Markets - FX, Money Markets + Derivatives (MT300 FX Confirmation, MT320 Money Market Loan/Deposit, MT360 derivatives), (4) Cat 4 Collections + Cash Letters (MT400-MT499, e.g., MT400 Advice of Payment), (5) Cat 5 Securities Markets (MT500-MT599: MT540-MT543 settlement instructions DvP/FoP/RvP/RfP, MT535 Statement of Holdings, MT564 Corporate Action Notification, MT566 Corporate Action Confirmation, MT567 Status + Processing Advice, etc.), (6) Cat 6 Treasury Markets - Metals + Syndications (MT600-MT699), (7) Cat 7 Documentary Credits + Guarantees (MT700 Issue Documentary Credit, MT707 Amendment, MT760 Guarantee/Standby Letter of Credit, etc.), (8) Cat 8 Travellers Cheques (MT800-MT899 mostly legacy/sunset), (9) Cat 9 Cash Management + Customer Status (MT900 Confirmation of Debit, MT910 Confirmation of Credit, MT940 Customer Statement, MT942 Interim Statement, MT950 Statement Message). Message structure: Block 1 (Basic Header), Block 2 (Application Header), Block 3 (User Header), Block 4 (Text Body - the actual message tags), Block 5 (Trailer). Tags format: Tag Number 2-3 digits + Tag Sub-Letter optional + Tag Value (multi-line). Migration: SWIFT MX (ISO 20022 XML format) progressively replacing MT in 2018-2025+ - CBPR+ Cross-Border Payments + Reporting Plus deadline November 2025 mandates cash messages migration to MX, securities messages migration future.
