IHE-PIX

IHE PIX patient identifier cross-reference MPI healthcare.

Definition

IHE PIX architecture: (1) Patient Identifier Source: registers patient identifiers + demographics into PIX Manager (e.g., EHR registers new patient with MRN + name + DOB + SSN). (2) PIX Manager: maintains cross-reference index across patient identifier domains, performs probabilistic matching + linking (using demographics: name + DOB + SSN + address + phone) to determine if newly registered identifier refers to existing patient or new patient. (3) PIX Consumer: queries PIX Manager 'given identifier X in domain A, return all matching identifiers in other domains B + C + D...'. (4) Transactions: ITI-8 Patient Identity Feed (Source -> Manager), ITI-9 PIX Query (Consumer -> Manager get cross-references), ITI-10 PIX Update Notification (Manager -> Consumer when cross-references change). (5) Transport HL7 v2 messaging (ADT^A04 messages for feeds, QBP^Q23 for queries) OR HL7 v3 PRPA_IN201301 etc. newer specification messages. (6) IHE PIXm (PIX for Mobile) FHIR-based variant for mobile/web applications, since 2015. PIX foundational profile: enterprise MPI implementations (Initiate + LinkLogic + Verato + Epic Compass + Cerner enterprise patient registry), HIE patient matching, Carequality + CommonWell + Carequality XCPD profile uses PIX-like patient discovery.

Origin

IHE PIX profile published 2003 by IHE ITI ; Final Text multiple revisions ; PIXm FHIR-based added ~2015.

Example in context

Multi-hospital healthcare system uses PIX Manager: patient registered Hospital A MRN-12345, then visits Hospital B registered MRN-67890 ; Hospital B feeds new identifier to PIX Manager (ADT^A04), PIX Manager probabilistic matches demographics (name + DOB + SSN match) + links 12345 + 67890 to same patient ; later Hospital C queries PIX given MRN-67890 returns both Hospital A 12345 + Hospital B 67890 identifiers for cross-hospital document retrieval.

  • IHE PDQ — complementary demographic query.
