Definition

GTIN-13: 2-3 digit country prefix (300-379 France) + GS1 Company Prefix + article number + 1 check digit. First commercial use at a Carrefour Marseille in April 1972. ISO/IEC 15420 standard.

Origin

Invented in 1976 by EAN (GS1 predecessor) ; deployed massively from 1980.
