Group Control Number

X12 functional-group control number matched between GS06 and GE02.

Definition

Carried by data element 28, the Group Control Number is assigned by the sender in GS06 and must be repeated in GE02; the 997/999 AK1 and AK9 segments echo it back to acknowledge or reject the whole group. It is scoped to a single interchange (not globally unique like ISA13) and is what a translator uses to bind an inbound acknowledgment to the group it sent.

Origin

Defined as X12 data element 28 (Group Control Number) within the GS/GE functional-group envelope of the ANSI ASC X12.6 Application Control Structure, maintained by the Accredited Standards Committee X12.

Example in context

<GS*IN*ACME*BUYER*20260620*1530*101*X*005010~ ... <GE*3*101~ — functional group control number 101 assigned in GS06 and echoed in GE02.</p>

  • GS — GS06 carries the number.
  • GE — GE02 echoes it.
  • X12 997 AK1 — references it to acknowledge the group.
