GLN-EXTENSION
GLN extension. The GS1 GLN enriched with an extension component to identify a specific sub-location within a parent entity.
Definition
The GLN with extension is a GS1 identifier that pairs a 13-digit GLN with a 21-character maximum extension component. The GLN identifies the parent entity (company, warehouse, store) while the extension identifies a geographic sub-location within that entity: gate, dock, zone, aisle. The format is standardised by GS1 General Specifications, application identifier (414) + (254).
Origin
The extension component was introduced by GS1 to address the need for fine geographic granularity in retail logistics: precisely identifying a receiving dock (gate 12), a storage zone (aisle A23) or a drop point in a store. It is defined in GS1 General Specifications version 23 and later, and used in EDIFACT EANCOM and in EPCIS for parcel tracking.
Example in context
(414)3012345000003(254)PORT-12-EST
This GS1 identifier combines a Parisian warehouse's GLN (3012345000003) and the extension PORT-12-EST which precisely designates gate 12 east-side. In a DESADV message, this pair lets the carrier know exactly which dock to use upon arrival — instead of just delivering to "the warehouse" and risking a wait.
