FARGATE
The serverless mode of ECS/EKS — no EC2 node management.
Definition
Fargate runs on Firecracker (microVMs). Configurations: 0.25 vCPU / 0.5 GB RAM up to 16 vCPU / 120 GB RAM. Pricing per second after 1-minute minimum. Ideal for EDI workers needing long lifespans (parsing a 1 GB DESADV batch) or persistent HTTPS services (AS2 server, AS4 access point).
Origin
Launched by AWS at re:Invent 2017. Available for ECS since November 2017, for EKS since December 2019.
Example in context
An Apache OpenAS2 server packaged as a container, deployed on Fargate with CPU-metric auto-scaling.
