EDIFACT-SYNTAX-VERSION-4
EDIFACT Syntax Version 4 is the EDIFACT ISO 9735 Syntax Version 4 (published 2002, revised 2020) — the current production version that introduces the release character and UNA-style separator declaration.
Definition
ISO 9735 v4 syntax introduces the release character (default ?) to insert a separator inside a value, the UNOC character set (Latin-1) and security via USB/USD signatures. It officially supersedes v3 in 2002 but v3 remains widely deployed by inertia.
Origin
ISO 9735:2002 (Edition 5); revised in 2020 without substantial change. Document maintained by ISO TC 154 (Trade Data Interchange).
Use
An EDIFACT dispatch declared as v4 shows UNB+UNOC:4+ACME:14+GLOBEX:14+...'. The 4 in UNOC:4 indicates v4 syntax, allowing Latin-1 characters and ? as release character.
