Data Element Separator
An EDIFACT syntax service character defined by ISO 9735.
Definition
The data element separator divides the segment tag from its elements and the elements from one another. Its default value « + » is one of the service characters announced by the UNA segment, where it sits in the second position.
Origin
Defined among the service characters of ISO 9735 (EDIFACT — Application level syntax rules), ISO/TC 154 / UN/CEFACT.
Example in context
In DTM+137:20260620:102', the « + » separates the DTM tag from the composite that follows; the inner « : » is a distinct component separator.
