BIKE-ENCRYPTION

NIST Round 4 BIKE code-based KEM.

Definition

BIKE parameter sets: Level 1, Level 3, Level 5 security. Sizes: BIKE-L1 public key 1541 bytes, ciphertext 1573 bytes (similar Kyber768). Specificity: DFR (Decoding Failure Rate) non-zero acceptable (~2^-128), differs from KEMs with perfect decoding. Performance: KeyGen slower than Kyber, Encap/Decap comparable. Position NIST Round 4 alongside Classic McEliece, HQC ; NIST backup KEM diversification standardisation decision expected 2024-2025.

Origin

BIKE submitted to NIST PQC Round 1 November 2017 ; advanced to Round 2, 3, 4 ; backup KEM standardisation decision expected 2024-2025 by NIST.

Example in context

A high-security organisation explores BIKE deployment as backup hybrid with Kyber768 ; argument: cryptographic diversification in case unexpected lattice-based attack discovered.

  • HQC — other code-based KEM.
