Definition
BCF 2.1 (mainstream) and BCF 3.0 (2022) with workflow improvements. Topic = an issue (clash, RFI, marker). ZIP container with Markup.bcf, Viewpoint.bcfv, Snapshot.png. Adopted by Solibri, BIMcollab, Revizto, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Trimble Connect. BCF-API REST available for direct integration.
Each topic can carry comments, viewpoints and markup; the exchanged file uses the .bcfzip extension.
Origin
BCF 1.0 published 2010 by buildingSMART ; v2.1 stabilised 2015 ; v3.0 published 2022.
The format was initiated around 2009 by the software vendors Tekla and Solibri, before being taken over by buildingSMART International.
Example in context
A structural engineer detects a column-duct clash via Solibri ; BCF export sent to architect who sees the clash in Revit with exact viewpoint.
