BAS
Beginning Segment for Application Status. The X12 opening segment of Transaction Set 824 Application Advice.
Definition
The BAS (Beginning Segment for Application Status) opens the X12 824 Application Advice Transaction Set, which serves as a business-level acknowledgement (as opposed to the 997 syntactic one). BAS carries a send date (DE 373), an application status code (DE 306) and a reference to the acknowledged document.
Origin
Transaction Set 824 and its opening segment BAS were introduced by X12.6 (Application Advice) to let a receiver acknowledge at the application level: business rule validation, semantic error reporting, retransmission request.
Example in context

Here, 20260514 is the send date, A codes the status (Accepted), PO-2026-0042 is the reference of the acknowledged original document.
