ARGONAUT-PROJECT

Argonaut Project HL7 FHIR clinical accelerator US 2014.

Definition

Argonaut Project key deliverables: (1) Argonaut Data Query Implementation Guide (published 2016): foundational FHIR Implementation Guide US-Realm specifying FHIR R2/R3 resources + profiles for accessing common clinical data (Patient, Encounter, Condition, Observation, Procedure, AllergyIntolerance, Immunization, MedicationStatement, MedicationOrder, etc.), required by ONC Certification + Meaningful Use Stage 3 API requirement. (2) SMART on FHIR: Argonaut collaborated with SMART on FHIR developing OAuth 2.0 profile for FHIR (Argonaut DataQuery + SMART on FHIR launch became combined foundation FHIR-based EHR APIs). (3) USCDI (US Core Data for Interoperability): Argonaut Data Query foundational then USCDI v1 + v2 + v3 (~2020-2024) inherited Argonaut clinical data resources mapped to FHIR R4 + US Core IG. (4) US Core Implementation Guide: HL7-published Argonaut successor, continues evolution clinical data FHIR profiles US-Realm. (5) Argonaut Project participants ~30+ organizations (Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, McKesson, Allscripts, Meditech, NextGen, Greenway, multiple providers + payers). Argonaut Project status: largely transitioned 2018+ to other HL7 FHIR Accelerators (Da Vinci payer-provider, CARIN Alliance patient access, Gravity SDOH, FAST FHIR At Scale Taskforce), but Argonaut legacy IGs + clinical FHIR foundation continues underlying USCDI + US Core.

Origin

Argonaut Project initiated December 2014 by HL7 + Boston Children's + Beth Israel Deaconess + EHR vendors ; Argonaut Data Query IG published 2016 ; transitioned 2018+ Da Vinci + CARIN + Gravity Accelerators.

Example in context

Population health analytics vendor needs problem list data from Epic + Cerner hospitals: both EHRs implement Argonaut Data Query IG + US Core (Argonaut successor), vendor queries via FHIR R4 GET /Condition?patient=Patient/123 returns Condition resources with SNOMED CT coding standardized US Core profile, vendor processes consistently across EHRs (Argonaut foundational standardization enabling cross-vendor interoperability).
