ANSI-X12-3
ANSI X12.3 Data Element Dictionary. See official source.
Definition
X12.3 is the substandard of ANSI X12 that specifies the data element dictionary: each element receives a numeric identifier, a type, a min/max length and a normative description.
Origin
Published by ASC X12 from the standard's earliest versions (1981+) and updated with each major release (004010, 005010, etc.). It is one of the five structural substandards of the X12 corpus, alongside X12.5 (interchange), X12.6 (application), X12.22 (segment directory) and X12.59 (transactions).
Use
EDI Translators rely on X12.3 for type and length validation. Every element used in a segment must be referenced in X12.3 by its identifier (e.g. 67 = Identification Code).
