ACORD-AL3
The legacy insurance EDI format — still pervasive in inherited IT.
Definition
AL3 uses fixed-length records and a nesting schema by level codes. Covers Policy Issuance, renewals, endorsements. Progressively replaced by ACORD XML (P&C, Life, Reinsurance), then by AL3-to-XML mappers.
Origin
Appeared in the late 1980s, maintained by ACORD (Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development).
Example in context
An AL3 file issuing an auto policy with 47 nested records.
