MT410 — Acknowledgement (Collection)
The acknowledgment sent by the presenting bank to the remitting bank after receipt of a documentary collection. Confirms intake before presentation to the drawee, with no payment commitment attached.
Purpose
MT410 confirms to the remitting bank that its collection has been received by the presenting bank and is being presented to the drawee. It does not prejudge the outcome: the drawee may pay, refuse to pay, accept or refuse a draft. MT410 is purely operational — it lets the remitting bank close its collection file on the sending side and wait for a follow-up (MT400 if paid, MT422 if there is a problem).
In 2026 practice, MT410 is optional: URC 522 does not mandate it systematically, and many banks omit it to save SWIFT costs. When sent, it is typically issued 24-48 hours after physical receipt of the documents by the presenting bank.
Tag structure
Very short flat message — typically 4 to 6 tags. It serves as a minimal acknowledgement and does not carry the economic detail of the collection (which was in the original MT420 / MT421).
Mandatory tags
| Tag | Name | Usage |
|---|---|---|
:20: | Sender's Reference | Unique ack reference on the presenting-bank side. |
:21: | Related Reference | Collection reference (= MT420/MT421 reference). |
:32A: | Amount of Collection | Date + ISO 4217 + gross collection amount being presented (echo from MT420/MT421). |
:72: | Sender to Receiver Information | Free-text comment — typically COLLECTION RECEIVED, PROCESSING IN PROGRESS. |
Real-world example
Acknowledgement sent by ICBC Beijing to BNP Paribas on 16 May 2026 confirming receipt of a USD 145,000 collection on invoice ACME-COL-2026-187, currently being presented to the drawee:

Common pitfalls
- MT410 ≠ payment commitment — the remitting bank must never treat MT410 as a collection guarantee. It is a purely operational receipt. URC 522 art. 4 reminds that banks act as agents without their own commitment.
- Missing upstream reference — without
:21:, the remitting bank cannot link the ack to its collection. Causes a suspense in the system. - Amount diverging from MT420/MT421 —
:32A:must echo exactly the original collection amount. A divergence flags a problem (partial loss, data-entry error on the presenting side). - Confusing MT410 with MT422 — MT410 = positive neutral ack. MT422 = advice of fate (non-payment, refusal). Sending MT410 when there is already a problem (non-conforming documents for example) muddles the communication.
- MT410 omitted — URC 522 does not mandate MT410. If the presenting bank does not emit one, the remitting bank should plan an MT420 (tracer) after a standard delay (typically 30 days).
ISO 20022 equivalent
No ISO 20022 equivalent. The documentary collection domain stays in SWIFT FIN.
