EDIFICE — EDI for European electronics

EDIFICE is the B2B forum of the electronics and high-tech industry. Founded in 1986, it plays for semiconductors, components and equipment the role EANCOM plays for retail: profiling EDIFACT messages for one sector — and, in the XML era, acting as Europe's relay for RosettaNet.

What is EDIFICE?

Electronics has a singular supply chain: very short product lifecycles, shortages and allocations, multi-tier global distribution, shared rolling forecasts. From the 1980s the sector's European players grouped in EDIFICE to speak EDIFACT the same way: same segments, same qualifiers, same scenarios — where the raw standard leaves too much latitude. EDIFICE is above all a producer of profiles and conventions — high-tech's counterpart of Odette for automotive or GS1 for retail.

The sector EDIFACT profiles

  • Order cycle — ORDERS/ORDRSP/ORDCHG profiled for allocations, reschedule dates and programme numbers.
  • Logistics — DESADV with the fine identification (lots, date codes, ESD packaging) components require.
  • Forecasting — DELFOR/SLSFCT for rolling forecasts and capacity commitments.
  • Invoicing — a sector-profiled INVOIC, now articulated with national e-invoicing mandates.

The bridge to RosettaNet

When global high-tech created RosettaNet (XML PIPs, RNIF), EDIFICE became its European relay: PIP profiling, implementation feedback and above all coexistence — many European chains run EDIFACT with some partners and RosettaNet with others. The EDIFICE interoperability charters document these mixed environments, including the arrival of APIs.

EDIFICE in the sector landscape

  • vs EANCOM / Odette: the same model — a sector community profiling EDIFACT — applied to electronics.
  • vs RosettaNet: complementary — RosettaNet provides the global XML standard, EDIFICE the European anchoring and conventions.
  • Today: the forum remains where the sector aligns legacy EDI, RosettaNet and API integration.
