EDIFACT in Dutch automotive
The Netherlands hosts ~280 million automotive EDIFACT messages per year, generated by a focused but strategic industrial fabric: Stellantis Born (Mini, ex-VDL Nedcar), DAF Trucks Eindhoven (PACCAR), VDL Groep (assembly and subcontracting), Bosch Netherlands, plus a new EV charging chain (Stedin, Alfen, NewMotion/Shell Recharge). VDA + Galia + Odette standards, OFTP2 transport over ENX.
NL automotive industrial landscape
Compared with Germany, France or the Czech Republic, the Netherlands has a focused and niche automotive industry:
- Stellantis Born — assembly plant in Born (Limbourg). Produced the BMW Mini (until 2024), now reconverted for Stellantis (post-2025 models TBD). ~3 200 employees.
- DAF Trucks — PACCAR Trucks world HQ in Eindhoven. Heavy-truck manufacturer (XF, XG, CF series). ~7 200 employees Eindhoven site.
- VDL Groep — Dutch conglomerate (~110 companies). Automotive components, buses (VDL Bus), assembly (historic VDL Nedcar before Stellantis). ~17 000 employees.
- Spyker Cars — luxury manufacturer based in Zeewolde, bankrupt in 2014 but restart announced 2023. Confidential volumes.
- Bosch Netherlands — Eindhoven (automotive technology), Tilburg (gas) sites. Tier-1 supplier.
- Lely Industries — agricultural robotics (automated dairy milking). Not strictly auto but uses the same EDI protocols (Odette).
- Alfen, Stedin, NewMotion/Shell Recharge — EV charging infrastructure, huge growth 2020-2025.
Stellantis Born — Mini and Spring
The Born (Limbourg) plant has a complex history:
- 1967-2012: Volvo (cars). Production of 343, 440, 480, S40.
- 2012-2024: VDL Nedcar. Contracted by BMW for Mini Countryman and Mini Cabrio production (~150 000 vehicles/year).
- 2024-present: Stellantis Born. VDL Nedcar acquired in January 2024, integrated into Stellantis group. Production transitioning to Stellantis models (Citroën, DS, or Alfa Romeo, TBD).
Stellantis Born EDI:
- Galia legacy standards inherited from PSA (pre-Stellantis 2021), converging towards Stellantis Digital ID.
- OFTP2 over ENX for exchanges with ~450 Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers.
- DELFOR/DELJIT in sequence mode (synchronous), DELJIT refreshed every 4 hours.
- Invoicing: EDIFACT INVOIC for legacy suppliers, PEPPOL UBL for new post-2024 contracts (alignment with Stellantis Group corporate policy).
DAF Trucks Eindhoven (PACCAR)
DAF Trucks N.V., a subsidiary of US group PACCAR since 1996, is one of Europe's major heavy-truck manufacturers. World headquarters in Eindhoven (~7 200 employees), plants in Eindhoven (assembly), Westerlo Belgium (cabins) and Leyland UK (light trucks).
DAF Trucks EDI:
- VDA 4905/4906/4913 standards for German suppliers (~70% of supplier panel).
- Odette V4 standards for non-DE European suppliers.
- PACCAR Inc. group convention for North American suppliers (Bellevue WA).
- OFTP2 over ENX for 100% of EDI flow.
- DELFOR 90 days rolling (3 months of rolling forecast), DELJIT in D-3 line sequence.

UNZ+1+DAF000142' VDL Groep — assembly and components
VDL Groep is a Dutch industrial conglomerate (~110 companies, ~17 000 employees) with significant automotive diversification:
- VDL Nedcar (Born): BMW contract assembler until 2024, now Stellantis subsidiary.
- VDL Bus & Coach (Valkenswaard): electric and hybrid buses, 4 200 employees.
- VDL Steelweld (Tilburg): welding technology for OEMs (BMW, Mercedes, Tesla, Stellantis).
- VDL ETG (Eindhoven): high-precision components for ASML (critical subcontracting).
VDL EDI architecture: Odette V4 standardised, central hub in Eindhoven (DataServiceCenter), OFTP2 over ENX. ~50 M messages/year aggregated across the group.
EV charging — Stedin / Alfen / NewMotion
The Netherlands is a world leader in EV charging infrastructure (~300 000 public points end-2024, #1 in Europe by density). This new chain uses EDI extensively:
- Stedin (network operator, The Hague): ~3 million customer connections. EDIFACT MSCONS / UTILTS exchange with energy companies.
- Alfen N.V. (Almere): EV charging point manufacturer (Alfen Eve charging points). Odette EDI for automotive-grade component sourcing.
- NewMotion / Shell Recharge (Amsterdam): charging network operator. EDI for interoperability billing (eMobility roaming).

Transport OFTP2 over ENX
Dutch automotive almost exclusively uses the OFTP2 (Odette File Transfer Protocol 2, RFC 5024) protocol over the ENX (European Network eXchange) network:
- OFTP2 is a file-transfer protocol with mutual TLS authentication, S/MIME signature and encryption, MDN acknowledgement.
- ENX is a European private network interconnecting OEMs, Tier-1/2/3 and some governments. Run by ENX Association (Frankfurt), TCP/IP backbone isolated from the public Internet.
- ENX cost: annual subscription ~5 000 € for a small node (Tier-3), ~30 000 € for a large OEM. Rarely used outside the auto industry.
- Emerging alternative: AS4 over Internet (EU eDelivery) for new EV charging entrants that do not invest in ENX.
Automotive-specific messages
- DELFOR — delivery forecasts (rolling 3-12 months). The main JIT/JIS message, sent weekly or daily.
